TEST THE GLOW PLUG OF YOUR PELLET STOVE

CANDELET

In autumn and winter more and more people decide to install them in their homes a pellet stove , a viable alternative to traditional heating systems.

The pellet stove is, in fact, able to produce a large amount of heat that can heat the rooms in your home. In addition, there are two aspects to consider: the environmental one, because they pollute less, and the economic one, because pellets are very cost-effective.

However, it is important to maintain it properly and consistently to make sure that it always works efficiently and does not run into problems such as ignition failure. In this article, we have analyzed the possible causes of ignition failure.

WHAT IS THE PELLET STOVE GLOW PLUG

The glow plug is an electrical resistor i.e., a small element whose purpose is to resist current so as to create overheating of the same. Generating heat inside the combustion chamber, in contact with the fuel will cause the stove to ignite.

The pellets are directly ignited by the flame in the combustion chamber, and the process thus goes on by itself: in fact, once combustion has started, the pellet stove glow plug is deactivated.

In other words, the glow plug is the ignition principle of the pellet, the spark that starts the fire. If pellets fall into the brazier but do not catch fire most likely the heating element is not working properly and a replacement part is needed.

THE CORRECT CLEANING OF THE PELLET STOVE GLOW PLUG

If the spark plugs are not cleaned, removing the debris that settles, it can happen that the stove will not be started.

Before replacing or testing the spark plug, we can try cleaning it. So let’s see how to clean the glow plug of the pellet stove.

Before doing anything, it is important to turn off the stove, let it cool down and disconnect the appliance from the power. Now you can reach the stove glow plug and, for example, clean and descale it using a small iron brush, similar to those for removing rust.

HOW TO TEST GLOW PLUG PELLET STOVE

Before proceeding to replace the glow plug, it is good to check and be sure whether this is the real cause of the failure to ignite or whether it is instead due to poor pelletquality.

If then cleaning is not enough and the stove still does not light, we can test the pellet stove glow plug using a digital multimeter with an Ohm Ω meter.

In fact, to observe whether the glow plug is functioning properly, it is necessary to access the control board, located next to the electrical power input.

Again, before doing anything you must unplug the device from the power outlet to proceed safely. The cover at the power connector is then removed, and the electronic logic board is then accessed. Inside you can distinguish the glow plug wires by thickness and color (usually different from others). Following them leads to the terminal block where the test can be carried out with a digital multimeter with Ohm Ω meter.

Set the multimeter to measure a range of 2 kOhm, simply place the test leads so that both touch the contacts: if the value reported by the meter is different from 1 then there is no interruption, so the glow plug is safe. If, on the other hand, the value is equal to 1, it means the circuit is open, so there is a need for a replacement glow plug.
